Two dates are in circulation for Hartalika Teej 2026, and both are printed by serious calendars: Sunday 13 September and Monday 14 September. Here is the arithmetic behind the disagreement, so you can settle it for your own household rather than guess.
The tithi timings everything turns on
Hartalika Teej is Tritiya of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha. In 2026 that tithi begins at 07:08 on 13 September and ends at 07:06 on 14 September. Note what that means at each sunrise:
- 13 September — sunrise is around 06:05, but Tritiya does not begin until 07:08. The day therefore rises under Dwitiya. Tritiya then runs for almost the entire waking day.
- 14 September — sunrise is 06:06 and Tritiya is already running. The day rises under Tritiya, but the tithi ends an hour later, at 07:06.
Why the two answers exist
Hartalika Teej is an udaya-tithi vrat: the tithi present at sunrise owns the day. By that rule the vrat belongs to 14 September, because that is the only sunrise Tritiya actually touches. This is the rule AstroVedansh's panchang follows, and why our vrat vidhi is published for the 14th.
Calendars that print 13 September are weighing it differently — Tritiya covers roughly twenty-two of that day's hours against one of the 14th's, so by duration the 13th is overwhelmingly the Tritiya day. For a fast that runs from dawn to dawn, that reasoning is not unreasonable; it simply answers a different question.
What to actually do
If your family follows a particular panchang or a family pandit, follow it — this is exactly the kind of split where continuity matters more than adjudication, and the vrat is not diminished by the disagreement. If you have no standing practice, keep it on 14 September and complete the sankalp and main puja between 06:06 and 07:06, while Tritiya still holds. That window is short this year, so prepare the sand Shivling and the shringar the night before.
One practical note for anyone keeping the 14th: Ganesh Chaturthi begins the moment Tritiya ends, at 07:06 the same morning. If your household observes both, the Teej puja finishes first and the Ganesha sthapana follows in the madhyahna window, 11:02 to 13:30 — they do not compete for the same hours.
