Moon (Chandra): Significance, Worship Day and Remedies
The Moon governs mind, mother, and emotional balance in Vedic astrology — here is what Chandra rules, why Monday is sacred to it, and how to strengthen a weak or afflicted Moon.
Among the nine Navagraha, the Moon — Chandra — is the only one that is a satellite rather than a planet or shadow point, yet Vedic astrology treats it as the single most important influence on a person's inner life. Chandra governs the manas (mind), moods, memory, mother, and the fluid, ever-shifting layer of consciousness that decides how a person reacts before they even think. This is why your Janma Rashi — the Moon sign, not the Sun sign — is used in Indian tradition for horoscope matching, naming ceremonies, and daily muhurta.
What Chandra Represents in a Kundli
The Moon completes one round of the zodiac in roughly 27.3 days, changing sign every two and a quarter days — far faster than any other graha. This speed is symbolic: the mind changes faster than circumstance, and Chandra is the karaka (significator) of exactly that restlessness. Classical texts call the Moon the queen among grahas, ruling over the mother, domestic peace, fertility, liquids, and the general public. It owns a single sign, Karka Rashi (Cancer), and is exalted at 3 degrees of Vrishabha (Taurus) — its point of highest strength — and debilitated at 3 degrees of Vrishchik (Scorpio), where emotional volatility tends to surface unless corrected by other yogas in the chart.
Chandra also rules three nakshatras — Rohini, Hasta, and Shravana — and in the Vimshottari Dasha system its Mahadasha runs for ten years, a period astrologers watch closely because it colours mental stability, the relationship with the mother, and emotional security for a full decade. A person's Janma Nakshatra, the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at birth, is what most Vedic astrologers use as the real starting point of any reading. Monday — Somvar, the Day of the Moon
Monday is named for Chandra in Sanskrit — Somvar, from Soma, one of the Moon's classical names. It is the traditional day for lunar worship, usually observed as Somvar Vrat, a fast kept by taking a single meal or avoiding grains and salt for the day. Because the Moon is closely linked to Lord Shiva, who wears the crescent — Chandrashekhar — on his matted hair, Monday worship usually combines the two: offering raw milk and white flowers to a Shivling, and chanting Chandra's beej mantra, "Om Som Somaya Namah," ideally 108 times on a rudraksha mala. Fasting on this day is believed to calm an agitated mind and steady a wavering Chandra over successive weeks — elders recommend continuing it for at least sixteen consecutive Mondays before assessing the result.
When the Moon Is Weak or Afflicted
Not every Moon behaves the same way, and a chart needs careful reading before mood swings are pinned on Chandra alone. A few classical conditions are worth naming:
- Paksha Bala (waning weakness): a Moon born close to Amavasya, in Krishna Paksha near the Sun, is considered low in strength — judged by its distance from the Sun, not its sign.
- Grahan Dosha: when the Moon is closely conjunct Rahu or Ketu, it produces an eclipse-like affliction — restlessness, overthinking, disturbed sleep, and fear out of proportion to the actual situation.
- Kemadruma Yoga: when no planets sit in the houses immediately before or after the Moon, or with it, classical texts describe struggle despite genuine effort — though this yoga is frequently cancelled by other combinations, so it should never be read alone.
- Chandra-Mangal or Vish Yoga: Moon with Mars or Saturn can create irritability or a heaviness out of proportion to actual circumstances.
None of these are fatalistic labels. Vedic astrology has always paired affliction with remedy — a difficult placement is a call to specific correctives, not a verdict.
Remedies to Strengthen Chandra
Classical remedies for the Moon fall into a few well-established categories, and a competent astrologer matches the remedy to the actual affliction rather than prescribing all of them at once.
- Gemstone: a natural pearl (moti), set in silver and worn on a Monday during Shukla Paksha, is the classical gem for Chandra — but only when the Moon is a functional benefic for that ascendant, which is why this should follow a chart reading rather than a general recommendation.
- Mantra japa: chanting "Om Som Somaya Namah" or the longer beej mantra "Om Shram Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah" on Monday mornings, facing east, is the most direct pacification for an unsettled mind.
- Donation (daan): offering white rice, milk, sugar, or silver on Mondays, particularly to women or to the mother figure in the household, is a traditional Chandra remedy.
- Care for the mother: because Chandra is the direct karaka for the mother, strained relations there are treated as both symptom and contributing cause of a weak Moon — repairing that bond is remedial in its own right.
- Fasting and routine: Somvar Vrat, along with regular sleep timing, is recommended precisely because the Moon governs rhythm as much as emotion.
If you have noticed restlessness, disturbed sleep, or friction with your mother that intensifies around the full and new moon, it is worth having your chart examined properly rather than guessing at the cause.
