Radha Ashtami (19 September): Vrat Vidhi and Why the Fast Breaks at Noon
Saturday, 19 September 2026 is Radha Ashtami — Radha's appearance day, exactly fifteen days after Krishna's. The puja is kept for midday rather than midnight, and there is a reason for that too.
Saturday, 19 September 2026 is Radha Ashtami — Ashtami of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha, kept as the appearance day of Radha. It falls exactly fifteen days after Janmashtami, and that spacing is the whole symmetry of it: Krishna appears on the Ashtami of the dark fortnight, at midnight; Radha on the Ashtami of the bright fortnight, at midday. Same month, same tithi, opposite halves of the moon and opposite halves of the day.
Puja timings on 19 September
The madhyahna window — when the puja is performed and, in most households, when the fast is broken — runs 11:01 to 13:27 today. Sunrise is 06:09 and sunset 18:20. Rahu Kaal falls 09:11 to 10:43, ending before the madhyahna window opens, so the main puja is clear of it. The nakshatra is Mula.
Where Janmashtami keeps you up until midnight, Radha Ashtami asks the opposite — the observance is complete by early afternoon.
Vrat vidhi
- Bathe at dawn and take the sankalp for the fast. Most keep a phalahar vrat with fruit and milk; some keep it nirjala until the midday puja.
- Set up a copper or brass kalash on a clean platform, and place the murti or image of Radha — with Krishna beside her, as she is almost never worshipped alone on this day.
- Bathe the murti in panchamrit, then in water, and dress it in new clothes. Offer the sixteen shringar to Radha as you would to Parvati on Teej.
- Offer tulsi, white and yellow flowers, and bhog — kheer, makhan-mishri, panjiri and seasonal fruit.
- Chant the Radha Kripa Kataksh Stotra or the Radha Sahasranama, or simply the name "Radhe Radhe", through the morning.
- Perform aarti during the madhyahna window, distribute prasad, and break the fast.
Why her name comes first
The pairing is always spoken in one order — Radha-Krishna, Radhe-Shyam, never the reverse. The devotional understanding behind that is not sentimental: Radha is taken as the hladini shakti, the power of divine delight through which Krishna is approached at all. On this reading she is not a consort standing next to him but the medium through which he becomes reachable, which is why bhakti traditions place her name ahead of his as a matter of route, not of courtesy. It is also why Radha Ashtami is treated in the Braj tradition as a fast of comparable weight to Janmashtami rather than a smaller companion to it.
Where it is kept
The centre of the day is Barsana, held to be Radha's birthplace, where the Shri Radha Rani temple on Bhanugarh hill draws lakhs of pilgrims and the celebration runs for several days. Vrindavan, Nandgaon, Gokul and the temples across Braj keep it with equal seriousness, as do the Gaudiya, Nimbarka, Pushtimarg and Radhavallabh sampradayas everywhere else. Her parents are named as Vrishabhanu and Kirti — which is why she is called Vrishabhanu Nandini, and why the greeting in Barsana today will be "Radhe Radhe" and nothing else.
