Jal Abhishek Time in Sawan 2026: Today, Tomorrow and the Best Muhurat
Sawan 2026 begins Thursday, 30 July in North India. Here is the simple first-day jal abhishek vidhi, the best timing windows, and the small mistakes to avoid.
Jal abhishek timing today and tomorrow
Through Sawan the abhishek is not tied to one clock time — it is tied to three windows that shift a little each day with sunrise and sunset:
- Brahma muhurat — roughly the ninety minutes before sunrise. The most prescribed window of the day for Rudrabhishek, and the quietest hour at any Shiva temple.
- Morning, after snan and before midday — the ordinary household window. Most families keep to this one.
- Pradosh kaal — from sunset for roughly two hours. This is Shiva's own window and it carries extra weight on Mondays and on Pradosh tithi.
The one thing to plan around is Rahu Kaal, which moves by weekday and by city — Monday's Rahu Kaal in Delhi is not Monday's Rahu Kaal in Chennai. Rather than trust a screenshot, check today's sunrise, pradosh and Rahu Kaal for your own city on the daily panchang, and pick whichever of the three windows falls clear of it.
Sawan 2026 runs until 28 August in North India. The Somvar vrats left in the month are 17 August and 24 August; the full Somvar calendar lists the South Indian dates too, which run a fortnight behind.
Sawan begins tomorrow — Thursday, 30 July 2026 — across North India (Purnimant calendar), and runs till 28 August. The first day sets the tone for the whole month, and it asks for very little: a simple jal abhishek at your nearest Shiv mandir, or even at home.
Best time on the first day
- Brahma muhurat (before sunrise): the quietest, most auspicious window if you can manage it.
- Morning to mid-day: any time before noon is good for abhishek.
- Pradosh kaal (just after sunset): especially dear to Shiv ji — ideal if mornings are rushed.
Exact sunrise and rahu kaal shift by city — check your city's panchang before you go.
Simple first-day abhishek vidhi
- Bathe and wear clean clothes; carry water in a brass or copper lota.
- Take a short sankalp: name the month, and what you are praying for this Sawan.
- Pour the water in a slow, thin stream over the Shivling while chanting ॐ नमः शिवाय.
- Offer 3 bel patra (smooth side touching the ling), white flowers, and raw milk if available.
- Light a diya, and do 108 (or at least 11) japa of Om Namah Shivaya.
Small things people get wrong
- Tulsi leaves are not offered on a Shivling — bel patra is.
- Haldi is not offered to Shiv ji.
- Pour a gentle stream, never a splash — the abhishek is the meditation.
