Tithi and the English Date: Why Don't They Ever Match?
One calendar says Ekadashi is Thursday, another says Friday — and both can be right. A tithi measures a 12-degree gap between the Moon and the Sun, so it can begin at any hour and run from 19 to 27 hours. Here is how udaya tithi, vriddhi and kshaya explain the two dates you keep seeing for the same festival.
Every year the same confusion returns. One calendar says Ekadashi falls on Thursday, another says Friday. Your family in Delhi keeps a vrat a day before your cousins in Chennai. Nobody is wrong. The problem is that we are comparing two completely different ways of measuring time and expecting them to line up.
A tithi is an angle, not a day
The English date is a container. It starts at midnight, ends at midnight, and lasts twenty-four hours no matter what the sky is doing.
A tithi is not a box. A tithi measures the distance between the Moon and the Sun. One tithi is completed every time the Moon gains 12 degrees of longitude over the Sun. A full circle is 360 degrees, so a lunar month holds 30 tithis: fifteen in Shukla Paksha as the Moon pulls away from the Sun, fifteen in Krishna Paksha as it comes back around.
So Pratipada is not "the first day". It is the stretch of time in which the Moon–Sun gap moves from 0 to 12 degrees. Purnima ends at exactly 180 degrees, Amavasya at 360. These are angles crossed in the sky, and the sky has never once consulted our clocks.
Why one tithi runs 19 hours and the next one 26
If the Moon travelled at a fixed speed, every tithi would last about 23 hours 37 minutes. But the Moon's orbit is elliptical — it moves faster when nearer the Earth, slower when farther. So a tithi can be as short as roughly 19 hours or stretch close to 27. This is ordinary observational astronomy, and why our ganita jyotisha texts compute the Moon's true position rather than an average one.
Next to a fixed 24-hour date, the mismatch is obvious:
- A tithi can begin at 4:11 am, or 9:47 pm, or 1:30 in the afternoon. It changing exactly at midnight would be a coincidence.
- A short tithi can slip entirely between two sunrises — beginning after one and ending before the next — so it never becomes anyone's udaya tithi and appears to be missing from the calendar.
- A long tithi can span two English dates and be present at two sunrises.
Udaya tithi: why "today's tithi" still has an answer
If a tithi can change at any hour, how does the panchang name one tithi for the day? Through a convention: the udaya tithi, the tithi running at the moment of local sunrise. Whatever is in force when the Sun rises is treated as that day's tithi for most vrat purposes — a practical rule that gives households one stable answer.
Sunrise is local, and that matters more than people expect. Sunrise in Guwahati and in Rajkot are separated by well over an hour. A tithi ending at 6:05 am is the udaya tithi in one city and already finished in another — so two panchangs can both be correct and still disagree. Our daily panchang is computed for your chosen city for exactly this reason.
The udaya rule is also not the only rule. Several observances are deliberately fixed by a different window: nishita kaal at midnight for Janmashtami and Mahashivratri, madhyahna for Ganesh Chaturthi, aparahna for shraddha rites and Vijayadashami, pradosh kaal for Pradosh vrat and Deepavali Lakshmi Puja. When a festival seems to contradict the udaya tithi, a more specific rule is usually at work.
Vriddhi and kshaya: the two cases that split a festival
Tithi vriddhi is when a long tithi is present at two consecutive sunrises. It becomes the udaya tithi twice, so one tithi number is written against two English dates. Shardiya Navratri 2026 shows this clearly: Saptami is present at sunrise on both 17 and 18 October, so the Navratri sequence spreads over ten calendar dates instead of nine. Nothing has gone wrong — the nine tithis are all there, occupying ten sunrises.
Tithi kshaya is the opposite. A short tithi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, so it is never anyone's udaya tithi and looks "missing". Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026, on 20 November, is exactly such a case — the Ekadashi tithi runs from 07:15 that morning to 06:31 the next, missing both sunrises — exactly where panchangs and sampradayas resolve the day differently, some keeping the date on which the tithi runs for most of the day, others shifting to the next.
Because both depend on local sunrise, a tithi can be in vriddhi in one part of India and not in another. This is the single biggest reason you see two dates for one festival.
What people usually get wrong
"The tithi changes at midnight, like the date." It does not. It changes when the 12-degree mark is crossed. If your vrat depends on a tithi being present at sunrise, noon or dusk, you need the start and end timings, not the date box.
"A kshaya tithi is inauspicious." Worth saying plainly: a missing tithi is arithmetic, not an omen. It means a short tithi fell between two sunrises. It brings no misfortune, needs no remedy, and there is nothing here to be afraid of. The same is true of a repeated tithi.
"If two panchangs disagree, one is fake." Usually both are computed correctly and differ on location, on ayanamsha, or on which resolution rule the tradition follows. Smarta and Vaishnava lines resolve Ekadashi differently by design — that is sampradaya, not error.
"North and South follow different tithis." The tithi is identical everywhere at a given instant; it is one angle in one sky. What differs is the month name — purnimanta reckoning ends the month at Purnima, amanta reckoning at Amavasya — so the same Krishna Paksha tithis carry different month labels.

Read the timings, not just the date, and use a panchang computed for your own city. If a family observance still leaves you unsure which day to keep, that is a fair thing to ask an astrologer rather than settle by forwarded message.
