Vivah Panchami 2026: 14 December — Rama and Sita's Wedding Day, and Why Weddings Are Avoided on It

Vivah Panchami 2026 falls on Monday, 14 December, the Margashirsha Shukla Panchami held to be the wedding day of Rama and Sita. Ayodhya, Janakpur and Mithila celebrate it, though in Mithila many families avoid weddings on the day.

Vivah Panchami 2026 falls on Monday, 14 December. The Margashirsha Shukla Panchami tithi begins at 16:47 (4:47 pm) on 13 December and ends at 19:15 (7:15 pm) on 14 December. Panchami is running at sunrise (07:06) on 14 December, so that is the festival day. By tradition, this is the day Rama and Sita were married. In Mithila and Nepal, many families do not hold weddings on this day; both sides of that custom are explained below.

When is Vivah Panchami 2026? Date, tithi and timings

Hindu festivals follow the tithi, not the calendar date. A tithi is a lunar day, measured by the Moon's position relative to the Sun, and it can begin or end at any hour of the clock. Vivah Panchami is the fifth tithi (Panchami) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha, the waxing half from new moon to full moon) of the month of Margashirsha.

In 2026 this Panchami stretches from the evening of 13 December to the evening of 14 December. The rule that settles the day is udaya tithi: whichever tithi is running at sunrise is counted for the whole day. At sunrise on 13 December the tithi is Chaturthi (the fourth); at sunrise on 14 December it is Panchami. So Vivah Panchami is 14 December.

Why is Vivah Panchami celebrated? The story of Rama and Sita's wedding

According to the katha (the traditional narrative), King Janak of Mithila arranged a swayamvar for his daughter Sita. A swayamvar is an assembly where the bride's family sets a condition and the suitor who fulfils it is chosen. The condition was to lift the bow of Shiva. Kings from many lands failed. Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, lifted the bow and it broke. Rama and Sita were then married.

Tradition holds that this wedding took place on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami, which is why the tithi is called Vivah Panchami, "the wedding fifth". The Balkand (the first book) of Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas describes the wedding at length, from the bow ceremony to the arrival of the groom's party and the wedding rites. This is why reading the wedding passage of the Balkand is the central practice of the day.

How is Vivah Panchami celebrated in Ayodhya, Janakpur and Mithila?

The festival is tied above all to three places: Ayodhya, Janakpur in Nepal, and the wider Mithila region.

  • Ayodhya: In Rama's own city, temples are decorated and a Ram-vivah jhanki is set up. A jhanki is a tableau: the wedding scene shown with images and decoration.
  • Janakpur: Tradition regards it as King Janak's city and Sita's parental home. Here Vivah Panchami has the feel of a wedding at the bride's house: the vigrahas (temple images) of Rama and Sita are married in a symbolic ceremony.
  • Mithila: Across this region of Bihar and Nepal, Sita is treated as a daughter of the house. Homes and temples hold readings of the Balkand, and people go to see the Ram-vivah jhanki.

The exact programmes and their timings depend on local organisers each year. What is described here is the general shape of the tradition.

Why are weddings avoided on Vivah Panchami?

This is the most-asked question about the day, and the plain answer is: it is a lok-manyata, a folk belief handed down over generations. It is known as a regional custom rather than a scriptural rule, and it is not followed everywhere.

The belief in Mithila and Nepal

Many families in Mithila and Nepal do not fix their children's weddings on Vivah Panchami. The reason is the belief that Sita's married life was full of hardship: according to the katha, after her wedding she faced exile in the forest and a long separation. People who see Sita as their own daughter feel that a tithi so tied to hardship is not one on which they would marry off a daughter of their own. It is less a superstition than a tender sentiment, an expression of affection for a daughter.

The other view: most of India does not follow it

Across much of north India and the rest of the country, this belief is not common. There, Rama and Sita are held up as the ideal couple, and their wedding day is seen simply as an auspicious celebration. In the jyotish (Vedic astrology) tradition, too, a wedding date is fixed not by a festival but by a vivah muhurat: a window chosen by checking the tithi, the nakshatra and the positions of the planets. December 2026 does have vivah muhurats; the full list is in our guide to wedding muhurats for November-December 2026.

So what should you do? If your family or community keeps this custom, honour it; it is a matter of family sentiment. If it does not, there is nothing stopping a wedding on Vivah Panchami; simply choose the date by muhurat, as you would for any other day. Both paths are sound, and neither needs to call the other wrong.

What to do on Vivah Panchami 2026

  • Puja: After a morning bath, offer worship to Rama and Sita. If you have a Ram Darbar image at home (Rama and Sita with Lakshman and Hanuman), decorate it with flowers and a garland.
  • Path (reading): Read or listen to the wedding passage from the Balkand of the Ramcharitmanas. The passage is long; read as much as the family comfortably can.
  • Jhanki: Visit a nearby Rama temple for the tableau. Many temples perform a symbolic wedding of the images of Rama and Sita, much as Tulsi Vivah marries the tulsi plant to the shaligram a few weeks earlier.
  • Timing: The Panchami tithi lasts until 19:15 on 14 December. If you want your puja and reading to fall within the tithi itself, finish before 7:15 pm. By the udaya tithi rule, worship at any time of the day counts as Vivah Panchami worship.

Vivah Panchami 2026: common questions

What is the date of Vivah Panchami 2026?

Monday, 14 December 2026.

When does the Panchami tithi begin and end?

From 16:47 on 13 December to 19:15 on 14 December (Delhi timings).

Why is 13 December not Vivah Panchami?

Because at sunrise on 13 December (07:05) the tithi is Chaturthi; Panchami begins only at 16:47 that day. By the udaya tithi rule, the festival falls on 14 December.

Is it wrong to get married on Vivah Panchami?

No. Avoiding weddings on this day is a folk belief of Mithila and Nepal, not a custom everywhere. Decide by your family's tradition and by the vivah muhurat.

How is Vivah Panchami different from Tulsi Vivah?

Tulsi Vivah is the symbolic marriage of the tulsi plant to the shaligram (a stone representing Vishnu), and it comes a few weeks before Vivah Panchami. Vivah Panchami is the wedding day of Rama and Sita. The ritual of a symbolic wedding is similar; the deities are different.

Which nakshatra is the Moon in on Vivah Panchami 2026?

At sunrise on 14 December the Moon is in Shravana nakshatra (pada 4) and in Makar (Capricorn). The Sun is in Vrishchik (Scorpio).

The tithi, nakshatra and sunrise-sunset for any day, set to your own city, are available in our daily panchang.
