Which Planet Rules Which Body Part in Vedic Astrology
From the heart ruled by the Sun to the joints ruled by Saturn, Vedic astrology maps every organ to a planet, offering a classical lens on why certain health issues recur.
In Vedic astrology, the body itself is treated as a chart. This branch, sometimes called medical astrology, works from a single foundational idea: the nine grahas and twelve rashis do not only shape personality and destiny — they also govern specific organs, tissues, and systems. When a planet is weak, combust, or afflicted by malefic aspects in your birth chart, the body part it rules is often the first place strain shows up, long before a doctor finds a name for it.
The Nine Grahas and the Body Parts They Govern
Each graha has a karakatva, or natural signification, over particular body parts:
- Surya (Sun) — the heart, bones, and the right eye in men (left eye in women); governs overall vitality, body heat, and the spine.
- Chandra (Moon) — the mind, blood, lungs, stomach, and bodily fluids; also rules the left eye in men and right eye in women.
- Mangal (Mars) — muscles, bone marrow, and red blood corpuscles; linked to cuts, burns, surgeries, and accidents, and rules the forehead.
- Budh (Mercury) — the nervous system, skin, and organs of speech, including the tongue and throat.
- Guru (Jupiter) — the liver, fat tissue, thighs, and ears; also governs the pancreas and overall bodily growth.
- Shukra (Venus) — the reproductive organs, kidneys, and face; governs semen, ova, and the body's reproductive fluids.
- Shani (Saturn) — bones, joints, teeth, and nerves, particularly the knees and any long-standing chronic condition.
- Rahu — sudden, mysterious, or misdiagnosed ailments, poisoning, and skin disorders when afflicted.
- Ketu — chronic and hidden conditions, the spine, and ailments that resist ordinary diagnosis.
Kalapurusha: The Zodiac as a Cosmic Body
Classical texts describe the zodiac itself as a body — the Kalapurusha, the cosmic man — with each rashi ruling a region from head to toe:
- Aries (Mesh) — head and brain
- Taurus (Vrishabha) — face, throat, and neck
- Gemini (Mithuna) — arms, shoulders, and lungs
- Cancer (Karka) — chest and breasts
- Leo (Simha) — heart and upper spine
- Virgo (Kanya) — abdomen and intestines
- Libra (Tula) — kidneys and lower back
- Scorpio (Vrishchika) — reproductive organs
- Sagittarius (Dhanu) — thighs and hips
- Capricorn (Makara) — knees
- Aquarius (Kumbha) — calves and ankles
- Pisces (Meena) — feet
This is why both the sign occupied by the Ascendant and the sign occupied by an afflicted planet matter in health analysis, not just the planet's own nature.
Reading Health From the Chart: Which Houses to Check
Body-part rulership is only half the picture. A trained astrologer reads three points together: the Lagna (Ascendant, representing the body as a whole), the 6th house (disease, injury, and daily struggle), and the 8th house (chronic conditions and longevity). A planet's rulership over a body part becomes medically relevant mainly when it sits in one of these houses, is aspected by Saturn, Mars, Rahu, or Ketu, or is weakened by combustion, debilitation, or a hostile Navamsha placement.
Dashas matter just as much as static placement. A Saturn Mahadasha or Antardasha commonly coincides with joint stiffness or bone-related complaints when Saturn is poorly placed; a Mars period can bring blood pressure spikes, injuries, or inflammatory issues; a Rahu period is classically associated with sudden or hard-to-diagnose ailments. This is descriptive, not deterministic — the same placement plays out very differently depending on the rest of the chart, which is why generic health advice by sun sign alone rarely holds up.
Traditional Remedial Measures
Where a planet is found to be genuinely weak and connected to a health-relevant house, classical remedies are prescribed to strengthen it — Jyotish supports the body, it does not replace medical care. Common measures include the Aditya Hridayam stotra and early morning Surya Namaskar for a weak Sun; a disciplined routine along with the Chandra beej mantra for Moon-related fluid and digestive sensitivity; and Shani mantra japa on Saturdays, paired with simple discipline in diet and posture, for Saturn-related joint and bone concerns. Gemstones such as ruby, pearl, or blue sapphire are sometimes recommended, but only after a qualified astrologer confirms the planet's dignity in your specific chart — worn on a wrong finger or for the wrong planet, they can aggravate rather than help.
