Blue sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as ruby, coloured blue by traces of iron and titanium. It is among the hardest stones in jewellery and holds a polish through daily wear. In Sanskrit it is neelam or neelamani, and in Vedic practice it belongs to Shani, Saturn.

What it is traditionally worn for

Saturn is the graha of time, labour, discipline and slow consequence. Neelam is classically worn to strengthen that significator in a chart where the astrologer judges Saturn to be well placed and in need of support. Tradition associates it with steadiness of effort, patience with long work, and the temperament to finish what is begun.

Who it suits

Only a person whose chart has been read for it. This is the one gemstone on which classical practice is genuinely emphatic, because Neelam is held to act fast in either direction — it is said to show its effect early, and just as early if the placement is wrong. No reputable astrologer sells it on the strength of a birth sign or a rashi table alone. Classically, a trial period is the safeguard: the stone is kept against the skin for three to seven days and the wearer observes before committing to wear it properly. That is the old custom described as custom, not a term of this listing.

How it is worn

Neelam is traditionally set in silver, or in panchdhatu, with the stone left open at the back so it touches the skin. Standard guidance is a minimum of roughly three to five ratti, scaled to the wearer. It is worn on the middle finger of the right hand, which is Saturn's finger, first put on during Shani hora on a Saturday, after the ring has been rinsed in raw milk and clean water and the mantra Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah recited. Thereafter it is cleaned now and then with water and kept from knocks.
