A gomti chakra is a small natural shell, usually the size of a fingernail or a little larger. One face is smooth and pale; the other carries a raised spiral, which is what gives the object its name — the chakra, the wheel. It is named for the Gomti river, where these shells have long been gathered. This is a set of eleven, and no two are identical: they differ slightly in size, in the cream and grey of the shell, and in how tightly the spiral is drawn.

What it is traditionally used for

In household practice the gomti chakra is associated with Lakshmi, and it appears most often in that context — placed on the puja thali during Diwali or a Friday Lakshmi puja, kept beside the idol, or offered along with kaudi and rice. Eleven is a common count because odd numbers are preferred in puja and eleven is the number usually named for this particular item. Outside the puja room, the tradition is simply one of keeping them where the household's money is handled: a cash box, an almirah drawer, a shop counter. Some families tie them in red cloth and keep them at the entrance. These are customs, honestly reported as customs — the object carries the intention of the person who keeps it.

Who it suits

Anyone who keeps a home puja and wants a traditional item for Lakshmi observance. Nothing about a gomti chakra requires a chart to be read first, and there is no rule restricting it by rashi or by nakshatra. How it is kept

Wash them in clean water before first use, and in raw milk and water if you prefer the fuller method. Dry them, place them in the puja, and thereafter keep them dry and undisturbed. Rinse occasionally when they gather dust. Being shell, they will chip if dropped on stone.
