Yellow sapphire is corundum, the same mineral family as ruby and blue sapphire, coloured by traces of iron into shades that run from pale straw to a deep honey yellow. Natural here means mined corundum rather than lab-grown material. It does not by itself mean untreated: heating is routine across the yellow sapphire trade, so ask us about the treatment status of the particular stone. Corundum is hard, so it takes daily wear well. In traditional setting the stone is left open at the back so it touches the skin. In India it is called Pukhraj, and in jyotish it is the stone of Brihaspati, the planet Jupiter.

What it is traditionally worn for

Jupiter is the Guru of the classical texts: the teacher, the counsellor, the principle of expansion and of dharma. Pukhraj is accordingly worn by people who want to strengthen that side of a chart — study, teaching, advising others, the steadiness that lets a thing grow slowly rather than suddenly. It is also given at the time of marriage, following the older association of Jupiter with a woman's married life. These are traditional associations, repeated for centuries. They are not a promise of any particular result, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling rather than advising.

Who it suits

Classically, Pukhraj sits most easily with Dhanu and Meen lagna, and with those running a Jupiter dasha or antardasha. It is thought of as the gentlest of the major stones, which is why it is so widely recommended.

• Jupiter is not benefic for every ascendant. For some, the traditional reckoning treats it as a functional malefic, and a well-read astrologer will say so before selling you the stone.
• Neelam, the blue sapphire of Shani, is never worn in classical practice without a chart being read first, because it is held to act quickly either way. Yellow sapphire is far milder, but the same caution applies in lighter form: have the chart looked at before you wear it.
• Weight is chosen in relation to the wearer, not bought by the largest number available. If an astrologer has named a ratti for you, say so before ordering and ask us what this particular stone weighs.

How it is worn

Standard practice sets Pukhraj in gold, on the index finger of the right hand. It is worn on a Thursday morning, usually in the bright fortnight, after the ring has been kept in raw milk or Gangajal and the Guru mantra recited. Afterwards the stone needs very little: wash it now and then in plain water, keep it away from harsh chemicals, and let it stay in contact with the skin.
