Lab-certified, energised rudraksha for calm and clarity.
The five-mukhi, or panchmukhi, is the seed of the Elaeocarpus tree, with five natural lines running from crown to base. Those lines are the mukhis, and five is the most common count; within that count, it is origin, bead size and the condition of the surface that separate one bead from another. It is the bead most temple malas are strung from. The item details beside the price set out what this listing supplies, and whether the bead comes strung or capped.
What it is traditionally worn for
In classical practice the five faces are read as the five forms of Shiva, and the bead is placed under the lordship of Kalagni Rudra, with Guru as its graha. Traditionally it is the bead of daily japa and regular practice: the hundred-and-eight-bead mala turned for Om Namah Shivaya is made of five-mukhi almost by default. Steadiness in the practice, not spectacle. Tradition does not promise more than that, and neither do we.
Who it suits
Of all the rudraksha, the five-mukhi is the one no practitioner hesitates to give. It carries no restriction by rashi, by ascendant or by running dasha, and it is handed to a beginner, a child or an elder without a single question asked first. It is the bead usually given first. If you already wear a stone that was prescribed to you, ask whoever prescribed it before you add to it.
How it is worn and kept
- Strung on red or black thread, or capped in silver. Monday morning, after a bath, is the customary time to begin wearing it.
- It is usual to chant Om Namah Shivaya over the bead nine or eleven times before wearing it the first time.
- Keep it away from soap, shampoo and perfume. Rinse it in clean water now and then, dry it in shade, and work in a drop of mustard or sesame oil occasionally so the bead does not dry and crack.
- A rudraksha is not passed around or shared. Many remove it while eating meat, while drinking, and during cremation rites. Follow whatever your family has always done.
If you are not sure the five-mukhi is what your situation actually calls for, or you are weighing it against a stone someone has suggested to you, have the chart read before you spend anything. You are welcome to book a consultation and buy nothing at all.
