Ahoi Ashtami

The Krishna paksha Ashtami of Kartik, kept by mothers for the long life and wellbeing of their children — four days after Karwa Chauth and eight before Diwali. Ahoi Mata, a form of Parvati, is worshipped before an image drawn on the wall with gerua, showing her with the syau and its cubs from the vrat's own katha. The day-long fast is broken not on the moon but on tara darshan — the first stars of the evening — since the moon on this tithi rises close to midnight. Mothers wear the silver syau mala, adding beads to it over the years.

katha

A sahukar's wife had seven sons. In the days before Diwali she went to the forest edge to dig earth for plastering her house, and her khurpi, striking into the ground, fell on the den of a syau and killed one of its cubs. The syau mother grieved, and from that day the woman's sons began to die, one after another, until all seven were gone. Broken, she told her sorrow to an old woman of the village, who said the debt was to the syau and its mother, and that Ahoi Ashtami was the day to repay it. On Kartik Krishna Ashtami she drew Ahoi Mata on her wall with the syau and its cubs beside her, fasted the whole day, asked forgiveness with folded hands, and offered arghya when the stars came out. Ahoi Mata was moved; the syau mother forgave her; one by one her seven sons were returned. Mothers keep the vrat in that faith — that Ahoi Mata guards children, and that forgiveness asked sincerely is heard.
