Vasu Baras (Govatsa Dwadashi) 2026: 5 November Evening, Maharashtra's First Day of Diwali

Vasu Baras (Govatsa Dwadashi) 2026 is observed on the evening of Thursday 5 November: Kartik Krishna Dwadashi runs from 5 Nov 10:36 to 6 Nov 10:31 and the cow-calf puja belongs to the evening. Some calendars print 6 Nov; we explain why.

Vasu Baras, also called Govatsa Dwadashi, falls on the evening of Thursday, 5 November 2026. Kartik Krishna Dwadashi begins at 10:36 on 5 November and ends at 10:31 on 6 November. The cow-and-calf puja belongs to pradosh, the period just after sunset, and at sunset on 5 November (17:32 in Delhi) Dwadashi is still running. That is why our panchang engine gives 5 November. Some calendars print 6 November; the reason is explained below.

How is the Vasu Baras 2026 date decided?

Three words first. A tithi is a day of the lunar calendar. Unlike an English date it does not change at midnight; it can begin or end at any hour. Dwadashi is the twelfth tithi of a fortnight, and "Baras" is simply the Marathi and Gujarati word for it. Govatsa means cow (go) and calf (vatsa).

Govatsa Dwadashi is a pradosh-kaal observance. Pradosh is the stretch of evening right after sunset. The rule is simple: the puja is done on whichever evening Dwadashi is running at sunset.

Here is how 2026 works out. Times are for Delhi; your city may differ by a few minutes.

Friday, 6 NovemberKrishna Dwadashiends 10:3117:31Trayodashi — Dhanteras

Dwadashi is running on the evening of 5 November, so Vasu Baras is that evening. By the evening of 6 November, Trayodashi, the tithi of Dhanteras, has already begun. The two festivals fall on separate evenings and the sequence stays clean.

The rest of the day's panchang, for those who like the detail: on 5 November, sunrise 06:36, nakshatra Uttara Phalguni (first pada), Sun in Tula (Libra) and Moon in Simha (Leo). On 6 November, sunrise 06:37, nakshatra Hasta, Moon in Kanya (Virgo).

How does Vasu Baras open the Diwali week?

In Maharashtra and Gujarat, Diwali does not start with Dhanteras. It starts a day earlier, with Vasu Baras. The first rangoli and the first lamp of the season go at the door this evening. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana keep the same day under the name Govatsa Dwadashi. The full 2026 sequence:

Bhai DoojWednesday 11 NovemberBhai Dooj

Look at the shape of the week: it opens with service to the animal in the home, moves through wealth and Lakshmi in the middle, and closes on the bond between brother and sister. Diwali is not only a festival of lamps; it is a festival of every relationship in the house.

Note that no festival in this sequence falls on 9 November, so there is a one-day gap between Lakshmi Puja and Govardhan. The night-and-morning split of Narak Chaturdashi and each day's detail is in the five-day Diwali 2026 calendar. For the next day, see Dhanteras 2026 and the Yam Deepam timing.

How is the Vasu Baras puja done?

The time is after sunset on 5 November, which is 17:32 in Delhi. The vidhi (procedure) is simple and is done at home:

  1. In the evening, wash the cow and her calf with clean water, or wipe them down with a damp cloth.
  2. Put a haldi-kumkum (turmeric and vermilion) tilak on both foreheads and place marigold garlands on them.
  3. Offer wheat and moong (green gram). This is the traditional naivedya, the food offering, for the day; many homes give sprouted moong.
  4. Light a lamp, do the aarti for the cow and calf, and let the family walk around them once.
  5. Draw the first rangoli of Diwali at the doorway and set a lamp there.

A few small things to keep in mind. Keep the cow and her calf together through the puja; do not separate them. Keep the lamp and incense at a little distance from the animals. Feed the offering slowly by hand rather than in a heap. Let children join in with the tilak and the feeding; that is the lesson of the day.

Women who keep the vrat (fast) do not eat milk products that day: no milk, curd or ghee. By tradition the cow's milk on this day belongs to her calf. That is why the offering is wheat and moong, not a milk sweet.

In Gujarat the day is called Vagh Baras. Trading families there traditionally "close" the year's account books on this day, so that Diwali arrives with a fresh ledger.

What is the Vasu Baras katha?

According to the katha (traditional story), the day belongs to the cow Nandini. Nandini is held to be the offspring of Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow, and lived in the ashram of Sage Vashishtha, where she was regarded as the cow-mother herself. It is believed that whoever worships a cow together with her calf on this Dwadashi receives Nandini's grace. That is why the cow is never worshipped alone on this day; the calf is always beside her.

The message is plain: gratitude to the cow as a mother, and respect for the bond between a mother and her young. A festival as big as Diwali begins with service to the quietest creature in the house. That is what sets Vasu Baras apart.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some calendars print Vasu Baras on 6 November?

Because Dwadashi is running at sunrise on 6 November (06:37). Many panchangs list every tithi by the udaya tithi rule: whichever tithi is current at sunrise is treated as the tithi of the whole day. By that rule the "day" of Dwadashi is 6 November. But Vasu Baras is an evening puja, and by the evening of 6 November Dwadashi has ended at 10:31 and Trayodashi has begun. So for the evening puja, 5 November is the date that fits. You will see both dates in print; our engine follows the pradosh rule for this puja.

My family goes by 6 November. What should I do?

Respect the family tradition. Just keep in mind that on 6 November, Dwadashi lasts only until 10:31 in the morning. If you do the puja that day, doing it before 10:31 keeps it within the tithi; the evening of 6 November belongs to Dhanteras.

Why no milk or curd on this day?

This is a custom of those who keep the vrat, not a rule for everyone. The belief is that on the day the cow is honoured as a mother, her milk is her calf's right. So women observing the vrat skip milk products and eat simple food such as wheat and moong preparations.

How do I do the puja if there is no cow nearby?

Many city homes keep a clay image or a picture of a cow and calf and do the same puja to it. Haldi-kumkum, garland, wheat-moong offering and aarti; the steps stay the same. If you can, send fodder to a gaushala (cow shelter) that day.

Are Vasu Baras and Govatsa Dwadashi the same thing?

Yes. Govatsa Dwadashi is the Sanskrit name, Vasu Baras the Marathi name and Vagh Baras the Gujarati name. One tithi, one puja; only the name changes with the state.

Is Vasu Baras the first day of Diwali?

In Maharashtra and Gujarat, yes. The Diwali week there runs from this evening of 5 November to Bhai Dooj on 11 November, with Govardhan Puja and Annakut on 10 November in between. In most North Indian homes the count starts at Dhanteras, so the day is less known there; but anyone who wishes to honour the cow can keep it.

So on the evening of 5 November, after sunset, put haldi-kumkum on the cow and her calf, feed them wheat and moong, and light the first lamp. Diwali begins here. You can check the sunset time for your own city and the tithi for that evening in our daily panchang.
