The 12 houses of a kundli (birth chart) map twelve areas of life. House 1, the lagna, is you — body and personality. House 2 is wealth and speech, 3 courage and siblings, 4 home and mother, 5 children and learning, 6 competition and service, 7 marriage and partnerships, 8 longevity and sudden change, 9 fortune and guru, 10 career, 11 gains, and house 12 (vyay) expenses, foreign lands and moksha. Every house is counted from the lagna.
What is a house (bhav) in a kundli?
A kundli is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. It is divided into 12 boxes. Each box is a bhav, or house. In plain words, a house is one department of life: one for home and family, one for work, one for relationships.
The lagna (ascendant) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It becomes house 1. The other 11 houses follow in order from there. Two people can share a Moon sign yet have different lagnas — so the same planets land in different houses for each of them.
Tradition also gives each house a Sanskrit name — tanu, dhan, sahaj, sukh, putra, ripu, kalatra, ayu, dharma, karma, labh and vyay. The name itself tells you the subject. The table below puts everything in one place.

A few terms worth unpacking. Purva-punya is the stored merit of past actions, which tradition places in the fifth house. Ripu means opponent or rival. Kalatra means spouse. Vyay means expenditure — of money, but also of energy. Moksha is liberation, the spiritual goal beyond worldly life.
Notice that no house has a single meaning. The sixth is about service and jobs as much as competition. The eighth covers research and inheritance alongside sudden change. Labelling any one house simply good or bad misses most of what it holds.
What are kendra, trikona, dusthana and upachaya houses?
The jyotish tradition sorts the 12 houses into four groups. Learning these groups makes a chart far easier to read.
- Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) — the four pillars: body, home, partner and career. These are treated as the foundation of the chart.
- Trikona (1, 5, 9) — the houses of merit and fortune: self, children and learning, dharma and luck. Tradition regards them as auspicious.
- Dusthana (6, 8, 12) — the houses of challenge and change: competition, sudden turns and expenses. They call for care and patience, not fear.
- Upachaya (3, 6, 10, 11) — the growing houses: effort, competition, career and gains. Matters here are believed to improve with time and work.
House 1 sits in both kendra and trikona. House 6 sits in both dusthana and upachaya. The same house can be read from two angles — which is why the sixth is both the house of rivals and the house of steady improvement.
How do I read the houses in my own kundli? Three steps
Step 1: Find your lagna
In a North Indian style chart, the diamond-shaped box at the top centre is house 1. The number written inside is your lagna sign (1 = Mesh/Aries, 2 = Vrishabh/Taurus … 12 = Meen/Pisces). Everything else starts from here.
Getting the lagna right matters most. A small change in birth time can shift it. The ayanamsa — the reference point used to measure the zodiac — also affects it; our ayanamsa explainer covers why.
Step 2: Count forward from the lagna
Move anticlockwise from house 1 and number the boxes 2, 3, 4 … up to 12. Each next house carries the next sign in zodiac order. If your lagna is Vrishabh (Taurus), house 2 is Mithun (Gemini), house 3 is Kark (Cancer), and house 10 is Kumbh (Aquarius).
Step 3: See what sits in each house
Now open the table above. A planet written in a house points to activity in that department of life. An empty house does not mean "nothing there" — its sign, and the planet ruling that sign, are read instead. As a beginner, simply note which houses hold the most planets. Those areas tend to be the busiest in life.
A worked example: a Vrishabh lagna chart
The fastest way to learn is to walk through one real chart. According to tradition, Shri Krishna's birth chart has Vrishabh (Taurus) as the lagna. That means house 1 is Vrishabh, house 4 is Simha (Leo), house 7 is Vrishchik (Scorpio) and house 10 is Kumbh (Aquarius).

Why does the rashifal count houses from the Moon?
In a birth chart, houses are counted from the lagna. In gochar (transits — where the planets are moving right now) and in the daily rashifal (horoscope), houses are counted from your Moon sign instead. That is why a rashifal says "for Mesh natives": your Moon sign is treated as house 1 and the moving planets are placed around it. Which house is the most important in a kundli?
Tradition reads the lagna first, because every other house is counted from it. The kendra and trikona houses come next. But no single house tells the whole story; the chart is read as a whole.
Which house should I look at for career?

What is the difference between a rashi and a bhav?

Is a planet in a dusthana (6, 8, 12) bad?
No. These houses deal with challenge and change, but they also hold service, research and moksha. In the jyotish tradition they are read as a signal to move carefully and steadily, not as a reason to worry.
What does an empty house mean?
There are 12 houses and 9 grahas (planets in jyotish), so every chart has empty houses. An empty house does not show a lack in that area. It is read through the sign it holds and the planet that rules that sign.
