Navratri 2026 Day 1, 11 October: Maa Shailputri Puja Vidhi, Bhog, Mantra and Colour

Shardiya Navratri 2026 opens on Sunday, 11 October with Maa Shailputri. Chitra nakshatra and Vaidhriti yoga cover the whole of Pratipada this year, pushing Ghatasthapana to Abhijit muhurat, 11:44-12:30 in Delhi. Story, iconography, ghee bhog, mantra and vidhi.

Shardiya Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, 11 October, and the first of the nine days belongs to Maa Shailputri, the daughter of the mountain. The day carries Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, and its main act is one careful one: Ghatasthapana, the setting of the kalash.

The tithi does not begin at midnight. Shukla Pratipada starts at 21:20 on 10 October and ends at 21:32 on 11 October (Delhi/IST). It runs at sunrise on the 11th, so the 11th is Day 1. The evening before is Sarva Pitru Amavasya — Pitru Paksha closes one night, Navratri opens the next morning.

Ghatasthapana muhurat on 11 October, and why it is not at sunrise

The classical nirnaya has three conditions. Pratipada must be running. The sthapana should fall in the first one-third of the daytime. And Chitra nakshatra and Vaidhriti yoga are to be avoided.

Most years those conditions do not fight each other. In 2026 they do. On 11 October in Delhi, Chitra runs from before sunrise until 22:32 and Vaidhriti until 21:05, while Pratipada ends at 21:32. Between them they cover every minute of Pratipada that falls in daylight.

The tradition has an answer for exactly this case: when Chitra and Vaidhriti cannot be avoided, Abhijit muhurat is used instead — the muhurta centred on local midday, held strong enough to carry a sthapana past both blemishes. In Delhi it runs 11:44 to 12:30. Two timings therefore get printed for the same day; this is the one the nirnaya texts reach for.

Sati, the fire, and the mountain

Shailputri's story begins with a death. Sati married Shiva against her father Daksha's wish. When Daksha held a great yajna and left Shiva uninvited, Sati went anyway, heard her husband insulted, and gave up her body in the fire rather than carry that insult home.

She returned as the daughter of Himavan, king of the mountains. Shaila is mountain; Shailputri is the mountain's daughter. She is also Hemavati, and in time Parvati.

The point is not that a new goddess appeared, but that the same Shakti chose a father who could not humiliate her. A mountain does not flinch.

How she is shown: bull, trident, lotus

Shailputri is depicted with two arms, not eight. A trishul in the right hand, a kamal in the left, a crescent moon set in her crown. She stands on Nandi, the bull, which is why she also carries the name Vrisharudha.

Nothing here is fierce; against the forms that arrive later in the nine days, Day 1 is deliberately still.

The colour for Day 1, and what the shastra actually says

By the nine-colour list most widely published, Day 1 of Navratri 2026 is orange, because 11 October is a Sunday and the list is keyed to weekdays: white Monday, red Tuesday, royal blue Wednesday, yellow Thursday, green Friday, grey Saturday, orange Sunday.

Now the honest part. That list is modern. It is not in the Durga Saptashati and not in the standard puja paddhatis; it spread through Marathi newspapers in the 2000s. Because it keys to the weekday of Pratipada, the Day 1 colour changes every year — last year's chart will not match this one. Other lists fix a colour to each devi and give Shailputri white or grey. Both are conventions, neither a rule; follow one list all nine days.

The ghee bhog, and the honest version of why

The bhog for Day 1 is pure ghee, offered plain or in a sweet made with it. The traditional statement: offering ghee to Shailputri and giving it away keeps the household free of illness.

Plainly: the nine-day bhog list is a devotional convention carried in vrat-katha booklets and regional practice. The Durga Saptashati prescribes no per-day bhog at all. The freedom-from-illness line is a blessing believed to follow the offering, and we will not dress it up as a medical claim. What is textual is Shailputri's link to the root of the body, where root and health sit beside each other. Practically: use cow ghee, and give a share away.

Beej mantra and dhyan shloka, with meaning

The nama mantra, suitable for anyone, is ॐ देवी शैलपुत्र्यै नमः. The beej mantra used in fuller sadhana is ह्रीं शिवायै नमः. Either is chanted 108 times. The dhyan shloka:

वन्दे वाञ्छितलाभाय चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखराम्।

वृषारूढां शूलधरां शैलपुत्रीं यशस्विनीम्॥

Line by line: for the gaining of what is longed for, I bow — to her who wears the half-moon as her crest, who is mounted on the bull, who holds the trident, Shailputri the glorious. The verse opens by naming desire rather than denying it; you are not asked to reach the kalash pretending you want nothing.

Ghatasthapana and Shailputri puja, step by step

  1. Clean the puja space, ideally the north-east corner, and set a wooden chowki with a red cloth.
  2. In a wide clay pot, spread soil and sow barley; water it lightly. These are the jwara that sprout across the nine days.
  3. Fill a clay or copper kalash with clean water; add gangajal, a supari, a coin, akshat and durva. Set mango or ashoka leaves at the mouth, a coconut wrapped in red chunri on top, and mauli around the neck.
  4. Place the kalash on the barley pot; invoke Varuna in the water and the Devi in the kalash.
  5. Install the murti or picture of the Devi to the right of the kalash.
  6. Take sankalp: say aloud your name, your place, and how many days you will keep the vrat — what you will actually do, not what sounds impressive.
  7. Offer gandha, akshat, flowers, dhoop and a ghee deep. An akhand jyot, if you keep one, goes to the Devi's right.
  8. Read the dhyan shloka, do 108 japa, offer the ghee bhog, then aarti and prasad.

Only the kalash installation is time-bound; paath and aarti may run past the muhurat.

Muladhara: what Day 1 is said to strengthen

The longer Navadurga dhyana describes Shailputri as मूलाधार स्थितां, seated in the Muladhara, the first chakra at the base of the spine. This is a tantric reading laid over the Puranic figure, not something the Puranic story itself says.

Day 1 grounds the sadhana before it is asked to climb. That is where the health associations come from, and where they end. Nine days of early rising, restrained eating and a fixed hour of attention will change how a person feels. The tradition calls that the Devi's doing and promises no more.

Day 2 belongs to Brahmacharini on 12 October. One quirk of 2026: Saptami runs across two sunrises, so Ashtami and Navami fall together on 19 October, before Vijayadashami on 20 October. The full run is in our nine-day Navratri 2026 calendar.
