Raksha Bandhan 2026 (28 August): Rakhi Thali Samagri List and the Right Step-by-Step Vidhi
Raksha Bandhan 2026 is Friday 28 August; the rakhi window runs from sunrise to 09:48 IST, with Bhadra over on the 27th. A practical guide: the thali list, the vidhi in order with mantra, the sankalp when a brother is away, the lumba for a bhabhi, and how long to keep the rakhi.
Raksha Bandhan 2026 falls on Friday, 28 August. Shravana Purnima begins on Thursday 27 August at 09:08 IST and ends at 09:48 IST on the 28th; it is present at sunrise on the 28th, so that is the festival day, and all of Bhadra is spent on the 27th. The date, Bhadra and this year's eclipse are covered in a separate article. This one is about what comes next: the thali, the ritual in order, the sankalp when a brother is away, the lumba for a bhabhi, and how long the rakhi stays on.
The window first: until 09:48 IST on 28 August
Times are for Delhi. Purnima ends at the same instant across India; only sunrise differs by city, so your window may be a few minutes longer or shorter — check borderline cases on your city's panchang.
| Event | Day | Time (Delhi, IST) |
|---|---|---|
| Purnima tithi begins | Thu 27 Aug | 09:08 |
| Bhadra (Vishti karana) | Thu 27 Aug | 09:08 to about 21:28 |
| Sunrise | Fri 28 Aug | 05:58 |
| Main rakhi window | Fri 28 Aug | 05:58 to 09:48 (about 3 h 50 min) |
| Purnima tithi ends | Fri 28 Aug | 09:48 |
| Rahu kaal (after the window) | Fri 28 Aug | 10:46 to 12:22 |
On the 28th morning the nakshatra is Shatabhisha, the yoga Atiganda, the karana Bava — no trace of Bhadra. Families who tie as soon as Bhadra lifts also have the night of the 27th from about 21:28; the mainstream observance is the 28th morning.
What goes on the rakhi thali
The shastra gives no fixed list. Older descriptions of the raksha-sutra mention akshat, mustard seed and durva with the thread — add them if you like; the rest is household custom. In practice:
- Rakhis — one per brother, plus a spare for the household deity.
- Roli or kumkum, with a little chandan — for the tilak.
- Akshat — whole, unbroken rice; a pinch of turmeric if you like.
- A diya — ghee or oil, matches within reach.
- Sweets — home-made if possible; coconut or dry fruit also serves.
- A lota of water and a few flowers — for the sankalp and aarti.
- A clean red or yellow cloth to cover the thali.
Brass, silver or steel, whatever the house has; keep the diya at the edge so the aarti does not burn a hand.
Before tying: sankalp and the first rakhi
Bathe, dress, light a lamp at the puja place. Many homes offer the first rakhi to the ishta-dev — Ganesh, Krishna, Hanuman or the Shivling — before the brother; custom, not requirement. The sankalp needs no Sanskrit: with water, akshat and a flower in the right hand, say in your own words, "I, (name), tie this raksha-sutra for the long life, health and protection of my brother (name)", and release the water into the thali. This sentence is the spine of the ritual.
The vidhi, step by step
- Seating: the brother sits facing east (north also acceptable), head covered; the sister faces him.
- Tilak: with the ring finger, roli or chandan, a few grains of akshat pressed on top.
- The thread: tie the rakhi on the right wrist with the traditional mantra — "Yena baddho Bali raja danavendro mahabalah, tena tvam abhibadhnami rakshe ma chala ma chala." Meaning: with the thread that bound mighty Bali, king of the danavas, I bind you; O protection, do not waver. If the mantra is unfamiliar, repeat the sankalp sentence.
- Knots: three is a common custom; the shastra gives no count. Not so tight that it chafes.
- Aarti: circle the diya clockwise three times.
- Sweets: feed the brother a sweet; a coconut, if any, goes into his hands.
- From the brother: a gift and the promise of protection, spoken or silent. The younger touches the elder's feet; then the blessings of the elders.
Five to seven minutes in all; with several brothers, repeat tilak through aarti for each.
If the brother is away: rakhi by post, and the sankalp
The shastra says nothing about rakhi by post — the question did not exist. Reasoning has to do what custom cannot: the essentials are the sister's sankalp and the brother's acceptance, and distance prevents neither.
- The sister: before posting, place the rakhi at the puja spot, offer roli and akshat, and say the sankalp with the brother's name. Add a small packet of roli and akshat to the envelope. Post 8–10 days ahead; earlier if abroad.
- The brother: on the 28th, after a bath, apply the tilak from the packet and have the rakhi tied over a video call while the sister says the mantra — a mother, bhabhi, daughter or any woman of the house can tie it. If no one is there, he ties it on his own right wrist; nothing forbids that.
- Timing: tie before 09:48 IST. Abroad, convert 09:48 IST to local time, even if that lands on the night of the 27th.
- Parcel not arrived: an "e-rakhi" image is not a raksha-sutra. Tie a clean mauli with the same sankalp and add the real rakhi over it later.
Lumba for the bhabhi, rakhi for a sister
The lumba is a Rajasthani-Marwari custom now common across North India: a married brother's wife receives a raksha-sutra too, as part of the same household. It is not tied on the wrist; it hangs from the bangles or chooda on the bhabhi's left hand. Same vidhi — tilak, lumba on the bangle, aarti, sweet.
Rakhi to a sister: no scriptural bar. The raksha-sutra is at root a bond of protection — priests have tied it to patrons for centuries — so it belongs wherever that intent exists. For a married sister the brother usually visits her home; otherwise the postal method applies.
How long to keep it on, and how to take it off
The shastra gives no duration; every period you hear of is folk custom:
- At least the whole day and night — the minimum.
- Until the next major festival — this year Janmashtami, 4 September 2026.
- Until Pitru Paksha begins (27 September 2026), or Dussehra (20 October 2026), or until the thread works itself loose.
Whatever your family follows, do not drop the rakhi in the bin. Simplest: place it at the puja spot, or wrap it in red cloth until next Raksha Bandhan. Otherwise release it in flowing water, or bury it in the soil of a peepal or a tulsi pot. If it carries plastic or metal, only the thread goes into water or soil — plastic in a river earns no merit. If a rakhi snaps while being tied, tie another, or a mauli.
A few practical questions
- Past 09:48? The morning window is best. There is no Bhadra on the 28th, so many scholars treat tying later in the day as free of fault — the festival day is still the 28th; the strict view stays inside the tithi. City-wise windows are in this article.
- Rahu kaal? 10:46–12:22 on the 28th, after the window; and the traditional bar for rakhi is Bhadra, not rahu kaal (your city's timing).
In short
Raksha Bandhan 2026 is Friday 28 August; tie the rakhi between sunrise (05:58 in Delhi) and 09:48 IST — Bhadra is over on the 27th. Rakhis, roli, akshat, a diya, sweets, water and flowers make the thali; the order is tilak, thread on the right wrist with the mantra, aarti, sweets, the promise. Brother away: sankalp before posting, tie over a call. Bhabhi: lumba on the bangle. Keep the rakhi on at least the day, then give it to water, soil or the puja place — never the bin.
Practice differs by region and family; where your household's custom departs from this, follow the household, and check borderline timings on your local panchang.
