Sawan Starts Today: First-Day Shiv Puja Timings and Somwar Vrat Prep

Sawan 2026 begins today, 30 July. The best puja windows for day one, a simple checklist, and a 4-day prep plan for the first Sawan Somwar on 3 August.

Sawan begins today — Wednesday-night sankalp done or not, the month is here. From today, 30 July, to 28 August, North India (Purnimant calendar) observes its most beloved month of Shiv bhakti. Here is how to make the most of day one, and how to be ready for the first Sawan Somwar on 3 August.

Best windows today

  • Morning till noon: ideal for the first jal abhishek — a slow, thin stream with "ॐ नमः शिवाय".
  • Pradosh kaal (just after sunset): especially auspicious for Shiv puja if the morning slipped by.
  • Check your city's panchang for today's rahu kaal before you plan the visit.

Day-one checklist

  1. Jal + 3 bel patra on the Shivling (smooth side down); white flowers if available.
  2. Light a diya in the evening at home — mark the month's beginning.
  3. Decide your Sawan niyam today: daily ॐ नमः शिवाय japa (11, 21 or 108), a Monday vrat, or a daily temple visit. A small niyam kept all month beats a big one dropped midway.

First Sawan Somwar — Monday, 3 August

Four days to prepare:

  • Plan the vrat type — nirjala, phalahar, or one-meal. Phalahar is the sensible start for first-timers.
  • Keep samagri ready: jal/gangajal, bel patra, white flowers, raw milk, dhatura (optional), diya-batti, and a small offering of fruit.
  • Somwar vrat katha book or app — reading the katha completes the vrat.
