Hanuman Jayanti
The birth day of Hanuman, kept across North India on the Purnima of Chaitra. Temples begin before daybreak, since he is held to have been born at sunrise. A chola of sindoor and chameli oil is offered, the Hanuman Chalisa and the Sundarkand are recited, and boondi laddoo is distributed. Several regions of the country keep the day on other tithis entirely.

Anjana and Kesari, the vanar chief, kept a long austerity for a son. At the same time, in Ayodhya, Dasharatha's putrakameshti yagya had produced a vessel of payasam for his queens, and a share of it was carried away by the wind and placed in Anjana's hands. So Hanuman was born — Anjaneya from his mother and Pavanputra from Vayu, and tradition holds him to be an amsha of Rudra as well.
As a child he saw the rising sun and, taking it for a fruit, leapt at it. Indra struck him down with the vajra and broke his jaw, and it is from hanu, the jaw, that his name comes. Vayu withdrew from the world in grief until the boy was restored, and to appease him every god came and gave the child a boon, so that he grew up beyond harm and beyond measuring. Later, for the mischief his strength led him into, the sages laid a curse on him: he would forget what he could do until someone reminded him of it.
The reminding came in the Ramayana. Sent south to look for Sita, he was told by Jambavan what he was, and crossed the ocean in a single leap. He found her in the Ashok Vatika, gave her Ram's ring, let himself be captured, burned Lanka and returned. Later, unable to identify the Sanjeevani among the herbs, he carried the whole mountain back and Lakshman lived.
Ram said afterwards that nothing could be given in return for what had been done. Hanuman asked only to remain wherever Ram's name is spoken. That is the form his immortality takes, and it is the reason anyone in trouble calls him Sankatmochan and expects to be heard.samagri
