Navratri 2026 Day 5, 15 October: Maa Skandamata Puja Vidhi, Bhog, Mantra and Colour

Navratri 2026 Day 5 is Thursday, 15 October — Ashwin Shukla Panchami, the day of Maa Skandamata, who holds the infant Kartikeya on her lap. Delhi tithi timings, Rahu Kaal, the banana bhog, her mantras, the puja order, and where Lalita Panchami is kept on the same date.

Shardiya Navratri 2026 opens on Sunday, 11 October. Its fifth day belongs to Maa Skandamata — the only one of the nine forms whose name is not her own but her son's. The image is unusual for a Navratri devi: no raised weapon, no battle. She sits on a lotus with a child in her lap. This page gives the date and Delhi tithi timings, the puja order, the bhog and the mantras — and is plain about where popular practice has run ahead of what the texts say.

Navratri 2026 Day 5 date: Thursday, 15 October 2026

The fifth day of Shardiya Navratri 2026 is Thursday, 15 October 2026. The tithi is Ashwin Shukla Panchami. Here is the full panchang for that day, calculated for Delhi.

Why Day 5 is an undisputed date this year

Navratri days are counted by the tithi standing at sunrise, not by the clock. Panchami begins at 01:14 on 15 October, comfortably before that morning's sunrise at 06:22, and it ends at 03:26 on 16 October, again before the next sunrise at 06:23. Exactly one sunrise falls inside the tithi. So Panchami owns one calendar day and no other, and every panchang you check will agree that Skandamata's puja is on 15 October.

That is worth stating because the same is not true later in this Navratri. Saptami begins at 05:55 on 17 October — just before sunrise — and runs until 08:28 on 18 October, past the next sunrise. Two sunrises, one tithi, so Day 7 is counted twice. Two days later the opposite happens: Ashtami and Navami share the sunrise of 19 October, so both are observed on that single date. The stretch and the squeeze cancel, and Navratri still runs 11 to 19 October, with Vijayadashami on 20 October. For the whole sequence see our Navratri 2026 nine-day calendar, and for the rule behind it, how tithis are reckoned.

Who Skandamata is, and why she carries her son's name

Skanda is Kartikeya — Murugan, Subrahmanya, the commander of the deva armies. Skandamata is simply his mother, and that is the whole of the naming. The Devi Kavach of the Durga Saptashati fixes her position in the sequence with a single half-verse: पञ्चमं स्कन्दमातेति षष्ठं कात्यायनीति च। — fifth Skandamata, sixth Katyayani. Kushmanda precedes her on Day 4, Katyayani follows on Day 6.

The order carries a quiet logic. Kushmanda is the devi from whose smile the cosmic egg is said to open; the very next form is a mother with a child on her lap. Creation, then care. The quality attached to this day in the vrat literature is vatsalya — the tenderness a mother has toward a small child — and the boon most often sought is santan sukh, the well-being of one's children. Devotees also say that because Skanda sits on her lap, worshipping her is worshipping him too.

How to read her murti

The standard depiction gives her four arms. Two hold lotuses. One supports the infant Skanda on her lap. The fourth is raised in abhaya mudra, the gesture of reassurance. Her complexion is described as shubhra, fair or bright. Her vahana is the lion, and because she is shown seated on a lotus she is also called Padmasana Devi.

What is missing is as telling as what is there. The forms on either side of her carry weapons in most depictions; Skandamata's hands are occupied by flowers, a child and an open palm, and the lion is crouched at the base rather than in motion. If a murti is a set of instructions for approaching a devi, this one asks you to come as a child does.

The colour for Day 5, and what the colour lists actually are

The most widely reproduced list assigns white to Skandamata's day, and white sits naturally with her descriptions and with the milk-and-lotus register of her worship.

But be clear about the status of that instruction. The Durga Saptashati and the Devi Kavach assign no colours to the nine days. The lists are a modern convention, popularised through Gujarati and Marathi newspapers a few decades ago, and because some versions are keyed to the weekday, the sequence shifts from year to year and from publication to publication. Some give Day 5 yellow, or grey. None is more scripturally correct than another, because none is scriptural. Wear what your family or local list says; if nothing in your household fixes it, white is the safe and common choice.

The bhog: banana, and what the texts do and do not say

The bhog for Skandamata is the banana. Ripe yellow kela, offered whole, usually in an odd number, sometimes alongside kheer or a bowl of milk. Many homes then give the bananas away — to a Brahmin, to children, or into the prasad distribution.

You will read that bananas are offered because they are good for health, or good for children. That reasoning is contemporary. The vrat manuals record the practice without explaining it, and the Saptashati does not mention bhog for individual days at all. This is an established custom with no stated cause behind it — a perfectly ordinary thing for a custom to be. Offer the banana because it is what is done on this day, not for a benefit no text has actually claimed.

Mantras for Skandamata

  • Name mantra: ॐ देवी स्कन्दमातायै नमः
  • Stuti from the Durga Saptashati: या देवी सर्वभूतेषु मां स्कन्दमाता रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥
  • Dhyana shloka: सिंहासनगता नित्यं पद्माश्रितकरद्वया। शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कन्दमाता यशस्विनी॥

A count of 108 is the usual convention for the name mantra. It is a convention, not a requirement — an attentive eleven is worth more than a distracted hundred and eight.

Puja vidhi, in order

  1. Bathe, wear clean clothes, and sit facing east or north before the ghat established on Day 1.
  2. Light the diya and the dhoop, and re-light the akhand jyoti if your household keeps one.
  3. Offer water, then akshat (whole unbroken rice), kumkum, roli and a chandan tilak to the devi.
  4. Offer flowers. Lotus is the traditional choice for this form; white flowers otherwise.
  5. Place the banana bhog, with kheer or milk if you are offering it.
  6. Recite the dhyana shloka, then the name mantra, then the Saptashati stuti.
  7. Read the Durga Saptashati or the day's katha if that is your family practice.
  8. Perform the aarti, offer the bhog formally, and distribute the prasad.
  9. If you are keeping the fast, break it after the evening aarti in the manner your household follows.

Lalita Panchami falls on the same date

Ashwin Shukla Panchami is also Lalita Panchami, kept as Upang Lalita Vrat in Gujarat, Maharashtra and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, in honour of Devi Lalita Tripura Sundari. The puja there is usually done in the evening.

A split sometimes occurs when a tithi covers the morning of one date and the evening of the next. That does not happen in 2026: Panchami is present at sunrise on 15 October and runs unbroken through that day and evening, ending only at 03:26 the following night. Whether your tradition reckons by sunrise or by the evening puja, the date is 15 October. Lalita Panchami is a regional observance — across most of North India, Day 5 is Skandamata's day and nothing else.

Timings, and why they change with your city

Both the auspicious and inauspicious windows on any day are carved out of that day's sunrise-to-sunset span, which is why they are not fixed clock times.

WindowDelhi timeHow it is arrived at
Day length11 h 28 mSunset 17:50 minus sunrise 06:22
One muhurta45 m 52 sDay length divided by 15
Abhijit muhurta11:43 – 12:29The 8th of the day's 15 muhurtas
Rahu Kaal13:32 – 14:58The 6th of the day's 8 equal parts, which is Thursday's share

Nothing in the vidhi above needs a muhurat. Nitya puja is not barred during Rahu Kaal; the window matters if you are starting something new that day. Check the window for your own city on our Rahu Kaal page.

All times on this page are for Delhi (IST). Sunrise differs by city — Kolkata is roughly half an hour ahead of Delhi and Mumbai and Ahmedabad a little behind — so the Abhijit and Rahu Kaal windows shift accordingly. Check your own city's panchang before fixing a time.

Day 6 is Katyayani on Friday, 16 October. The heavier days follow soon after, both on the same date this year — see Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami 2026.
