Shiv

Shiv is the auspicious one — Mahadev, who dissolves what has run its course so that creation can begin again. He is worshipped most often in the aniconic form of the Shivling, and that worship asks for nothing more elaborate than water, a bel patra and a lamp. Of all the gods he is called Bholenath, the innocent one, because he is pleased by simplicity rather than by grandeur. Monday is his weekday and Shravan (Sawan) his month. His three standing vrats — Sawan Somwar, Pradosh on every Trayodashi, and the Chaturdashi night of Masik Shivratri — need neither a priest nor expense: a jalabhishek at dawn and the five syllables of Om Namah Shivaya are the whole practice.
